“multiple people who don’t make excuses"

I began working at Fort Pierce Central High School in 1981. As a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and graduate of the Saint Lucie County School District, I saw the need to initiate a group for young men to be mentored by members of the Fraternity. Thus, I started a group called Omega Gents. We targeted young men in grades 9 through 12. Some Brothers in the chapter didn't want the symbolizing of 'Omega Gents' to be used because they didn't want kids to wear the Omega Greek letter. So, the name was changed to "Lamplighters Youth Group". Although we were based at Fort Pierce Central High School, we accepted young men from throughout the district and even a few from out of Saint Lucie County. Over the years, we have mentored hundreds of young men that have gone on to pursue various career paths. One of the paths that makes me proud is that 12 former Lamplighters are now members of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. It is very rewarding to have been able to touch the lives of the Young men that choose the title "Lamplighter".

I became a Lamplighter in 1999 as a freshman at Fort Pierce Central High School. As I matriculated in age the men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated played a tremendous role in my development as a young man.
As a senior, following the principals of Leadership, Academics, Mentorship, and Perseverance my brothers and I came up with the idea to include Junior Lamplighters spanning from grades 6th through 8th. It was our mission to take the same mentoring that we received and pass it down to those younger than us. After graduating from Florida A&M University with a degree in education, I aspired to follow in my father's footsteps and impact youth. I pledged Omega Psi Phi in 2011 and immediately began attending Lamplighter meetings regularly. Then in 2018 I took over as head advisor of our youth group. Lamplighters is not just a club that boys join, it is a youth group focused on helping these young men navigate through life mentally, physically, academically, and spiritually. To date we have helped hundreds of young men navigate life from boys to outstanding young men. It is my hope to continue this legacy that my father started nearly five decades ago.
That’s a great question. Non-profits have a lot of ways to inspire change through volunteering — and it’s not just about getting people to show up, it’s about sparking real engagement and making people feel like they’re part of something bigger.
